Sexual Discrimination
Sexual discrimination can be defined to be any negative action taken against a person for no other reason except their gender. Sexual harassment can be considered a form of sexual discrimination, as a male boss could proposition a female employee and presumably would not do the same to a male. Sexual discrimination was a huge problem in America before the Civil Rights Movement, but unfortunately it remains an issue, although less so, even today.
Sexual discrimination is probably most prevalent today in the form of unequal wages. It is not atypical for women to receive less pay for the same work as their male counterparts. This is illegal and action must be taken to prevent employers from discriminating in this way.
Discrimination based on gender can also take the form of wrongful termination, lack of promotion, or not hiring an employee. There can also be in appropriate questions during an interview or as an employee that fall under the umbrella of sexual discrimination.
Many people think that, in part as a result of sexual discrimination, women in the workplace have a sort of "glass ceiling" that they cannot pass. Today, many women are successful and thriving in many work environments, but the vast majority (over 90%) of executives in Fortune 1000 companies are males.
