The LGBT Glass Ceiling
Federal laws protect many minorities from being discriminated against in the workplace. Employers are barred from discriminating against employees based on age, race, sex, disability, or national origin. Unfortunately, no national law is currently on the books to protect workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, with the passage of the Matthew Shepard Act in October of 2009 and the adoption of anti-sexual-orientation discrimination bills, there is hope for the future.
If you or someone you love has experienced discriminatory employment actions based on sexual orientation, the Austin employment attorneys of Melton & Kumler, LLP, may be able to help. We believe that everyone has a right to work, and we may be able to help you defend yours. Please contact us today by calling 512-330-0017.
Gay Rights Protection
Currently, Texas is not one of the states that have laws on the books protecting gay employees in the private sector from harassment or other discriminatory practices. The states that do are:
- California
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Minnesota
- Nevada
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
- Washington
- Wisconsin
While Texas does not yet have laws protecting LGBT employees, the overall trend towards anti-discrimination laws suggests that it may in the future. Municipalities and local governments are also increasingly adopting such legislation.
